Useful Information

Did you know you can apply for your licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday? Doing so allows you to have your first lesson as soon as you are 17, even on the day.

The DSA recommend learner drivers study for the theory test whilst taking lessons from an approved instructor.

You need to pass your theory and hazard perception test at the same time before you can apply for the practical test.

The practical test now includes a ‘Show and Tell’ element which is knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance but don’t worry Charlies Driver Training will tell you everything you need to know… and more.

The practical test also includes an independent driving section which is a ten minute period during which the candidate has to find their own way through a series of junctions. We will prepare you for this early in your driver development so you are used to it well before you take your driving test.

The Driving Standards Agency states:

• The average learner requires 45 hours of tuition, including 22 hours of private practice, to be ready for the practical test.
• The national average first time test pass rate is about 40%.

Private Practice

To accompany a learner driver you need to be at least 21 and have held a full licence for at least 3 years.

Five useful tips to help make private practice more effective:

1. Use private practice to follow up things covered in the driving lessons.
2. Keep a record of your practice drives to show your driving instructor.
3. It is important to support what the instructor is teaching in the lessons.
4. Arrange specific times for driving practice.
5. Be patient and keep calm.
